Angelokastro
in Corfu
(Korfu) – Krini is a Byzantine fortress, situated on the northwest
coast near Paleokastritsa, built in the 13th century by Michael Angelo B' the
son of Epirus's archbishop Michael Angelo.
It is located on particularly steep and rocky
terrain, a tourist attraction today, also held out. The medieval castle
overlooks the area and is situated on a seemingly inaccessible cliff top near
the village of Krini which can be reached by a very scenic drive via
the village of Lakones, or on foot, though the walk is arduous.
If you wish to pay a visit turn right in the centre of Makrades towards Krini .In a few
hundred metres you come to the old village of Krini with its small attractive square. Follow the
road ahead of you and in about 1 km the impressive old castle comes into view. The
road now goes steeply downhill. At the bottom there is limited parking and a
modern restaurant.
This Byzantine
Fort was the western-most outpost of the Despotate of Epirus, a Greek
Orthodox governmental structure that began to prevail in the western Balkans as
the Byzantine Empire
was in decline in the 13th century. During Venetian rule of the island the
governor's seat was in the fortress. If you reach the fortress you'll find a
chapel, a shrine in a cave, a pilgrimage site, the cell of a hermit, and marvellous
views.
The
fortress could hold up to 4,000 islanders in times of invasion. It withstood
incursions by the Geonese in 1403, Saracens and even Sueliman the Magnificent
in 1537. It was abandoned by the British after their protectorate was established
and today is home to birds. Its vantage point allowed signalling other island
forts in succession around the island.
There is a monastery on the promontory about a mile
from the beach. It was founded in 1225, while the buildings in their present
state date back to the 18th century. It is a great place to enjoy a peaceful
sunset overlooking the Ionian Sea.
There is a small museum in the monastery with Byzantine and Post-Byzantine
icons and a skeleton of a mammoth (or some other prehistoric fossilized beast).
Paleokastritsa is the type of place where
you will quickly make friends with locals and be drawn back to its beauty and
charm again and again. Retaining a fairly laid back atmosphere this is the
perfect retreat for families and anyone wishing to escape the bustle of every
day life, although the resort does get rather busy with `day trips` wanting to
capture the beautiful views such as those from the "Bella Vista" on
film.
